The least we can say about Raf Simons'
celebration of his 10 year career in the men's fashion industry is
that it was an international event. Interesting fact : the organising
body of this retrospective homage (the Pitti Immagine Discovery Foundation
in Florence) did not want to delve into nostalgic archives. On the
contrary ! Tiered into three components (publication of a monography,
video installation, and fashion show of the Summer 2006 menswear collection),
this event most importantly highlighted the work of one of the most
innovative men's fashion designers, by demonstrating the how and where
his Past, Present and Future clash and intertwine. Raf Simons, born
in 1968 in Neerpelt, Belgium, qualified in industrial design, started
his professional career as a furniture designer and interior decorator.
In 1995, he decided to launch his own menswear label, regardless of
the fact that he was self-taught in the ways of fashion. Thanks to
his previous experiences in the design field, it was in no time at
all that he became at ease with lines, volumes, and fabric exploration
that elaborate his unique universe. A craft that immediately found
its place within other creative fields of expression like music, art,
performance, images and literature. This is why he is so unique ! Motley and cosmopolitan Raf Simons does not hesitate to mix the genres and generations, inspiring himself by the rebellion of the youth culture (punk, goth, mod) that he blends with the codes and roots of so called tradition. Invited on numerous occasions to different exhibitions (where among he co-currated the « The Fourth Sex » exhibit with Francesco Bonami at the Modern Art Museum of Chicago in 2003), he also created a menswear line in 1999 for the Italian house, Ruffo Research. Latest news for 2005 : Raf Simons has taken the position as the artistic director of Jil Sander for the women's and men's lines. |
