MÊHLÊ is a London based womenswear brand, founded by Slovenian fashion designer Maja Mehle, a graduate of the Royal College of Art and award-winning filmmaker and graphic designer Miha fabio Kalan.
Since finishing her MA Fashion Womenswear in 2009, Maja worked with menswear designer Matthew Miller. In 2012 she started focusing more on brand MÊHLÊ while still working as a freelance design and technical consultant for other brands.
Miha and Maja founded MÊHLÊ, a conceptual design studio, combining their love for fashion, graphic design and film in the spring of 2010. They have exhibited their work at a number of exhibitions internationally, including ‘Fish and Chips, Twice Please?!’ in Vienna (August 2010), the Sens(n)ation exhibition in Ljubljana (Slovenia, November 2011), which showcased best of Slovenian fashion design next to the Masion Martin Margiela exhibition. In May 2012 they were invited to show their collection ‘(This Flowers are) Still Alive’ at Projekt Radar, as part of the official schedule of European City of Culture 2012 in Maribor (Slovenia).
The SS ‘14 collection ‘The Sky is the Limit’ was inspired by their childhood in the former Yugoslavia. They have interpreted their memories of celebrating the Day of Youth, an event where children would meet wearing brightly coloured tracksuits, an idealized dream of society where everything is possible and the slogan ‘Brotherhood and Unity’ seemed real. Lucy McKenzie’s trompe l’oeils installations and Rene Magritte’s paintings have also influenced the collection.
MÊHLÊ’s signature aesthetic is a combination of traditional tailoring and technical sportswear, androgynous and feminine. Sharp, functional silhouettes and a sustainable approach to understated but classic design are the core elements of the MÊHLÊ look.
